About the artist
Arturo Marty's painting is a platform for the illusionist's confessional obsession, but also a spectacular set for the unlimited exercise of seduction. If in the beginning Marty barely suggested the scenographic nature of the prospective painting, in this second stage there is a deliberate use of the image as a site of theatrical representation. The scene is a circus arena, a dreamlike matrix, a fantastic uterus. The entire extension of the dream is a landscape where the seductive-evocative power of the illusionist reigns. As in any act of illusion -and seduction-, the action does not concentrate on the actor's trick but on the effect on the spectator.
There is always that timid but tenacious deference to the public in Marty. The very insistence on placing the anecdote, not in the pictorial convention but in the theatrical one, underlines the importance of an essential element to the representation such as the curtain. Apart from the coincidences that may exist with the theatrical profession exercised at one time by Marty as an actor, we must understand how the curtain, constant in his later plastic work, is the object that relates the real with the fantasy, the intimate production with its consumption. public, seduction with the exhibition, the artist with the public, the trick with the risk.
