Carlos Vargas Pons

About the artist

He studied art history, painting and drawing in his hometown, under the tutelage of Enrique Ruiz Rojo, José Fors, Davis Birks and Gonn Mosny.


He has presented solo exhibitions in important venues such as the Carrillo Gil Museum, the Pinacoteca de Nuevo León, the Museum of Arts of the University of Guadalajara, the Cabañas Institute, the Guadalajara Museum, the Zapopan Art Museum, the Galería de Arte Actual Mexicano, the Haus der Kunst Gallery, the Galería de Arte Mexicano, and the Thomas Cohn Gallery. He received first prize for acquisition at the 1990 and 1991 National Young Art Meeting. Among other national awards, he was recognized in 2005 and again in 2015 with the Creators with a Career Scholarship, issued by the National Fund for Culture and the Arts.


He has participated in group exhibitions at major museums in Mexico and in countries such as Spain, Romania, the United States, France, Austria, Slovenia, Czechoslovakia, and Switzerland. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Guadalajara Museum of Arts, the Monterrey Museum of Contemporary Art, the Aguascalientes Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit, and the Cabañas Cultural Institute.

Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco in 1968.


He studied painting and drawing with the masters Ruiz Rojo, José Fors and David Birks.


He held his first solo exhibitions in 1993 at the Pinacoteca de Nuevo León, the Galería Arte Actual Mexicano in Monterrey, and the Museo Carrillo Gil in Mexico City.


In 1996 he exhibited at the Thomas Cohn Gallery in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and at the Iturralde Gallery in Los Angeles, CA.

He received the Acquisition Award in 1990 and 1991 at the National Young Art Meetings; First Prize at the Cabañas Cultural Institute's October Salon; Second Prize in the national painting competitions INDART, SA and Germán Gedovius, both in 1992; and the FONCA Young Creators Scholarship in 1993.
